Bates started his NBA career with the Portland Trail Blazers, and was there for three years before being cut. He played briefly with the Washington Bullets in the 1982-83 season, appearing in 15 games before being let go. He was picked up by the Lakers as a free agent in April 1983, after having spent Christmas 1982 at a drug and alcohol rehabilitation clinic and lasted for a total of four games before getting cut.
